Wild Magic Surge Table

First, my introduction. I've been a GM for a few years. Switched to Pathfinder just over a year ago. LOVE it. Just recently started pbp , very nice way to play. Now, this will be my first attempt at a long campaign. I don't mind slow posting. Once a day will be fine. Since this is mostly to see how the campaign runs, taking time to create the world and what happens is important. So story and characters are important. Must flow well together.
Okay, down to the setting :

The world is split into 5 continents, each continent is split in to 2sections.Each continent is ruled by a dragon. Copper and Brass. Gold and bronze. Red and Black, Blue and Green. And finally, the center continent, Silver and White. There is a war, a war played by the Great rulers, Great Wyrms , and the populace are the pawns.
The chromatics are evil, power hungry tyrants, who treat their underlines with distaste, use them for entertainment, even food. Seldom they turn human, always in their dragon form to show the peasants whom they serve
The metallic are the opposite, friendly, kind, just, mercifully. They often travel the lands in mortal guise to see life from their people's eyes.
Dragons keep the world together, every dragon, dragon type, dragon blooded has the power and potential to keep magic stable, for if magic is used outside their influence, wild surges can happen if one does not grasp the magic they are wielding

If i peaked your interest, here is the character creation stuffs :

Character Creation:

1. 30pt buy. No starting stat over 18, before race modifies
2. Any race from PG and ApG , as long as it's RP is less than 21. No race building.
3. No evil allignments
4. No anti paladins or gunslinger
5. 2 Traits
6. Max HP for first 3 levels. Rest is half+1.
7. Start at level 5
8. Max gold for level
9. No items more than +2 enhancement

Short background needed so i can see what and who you are. After that longer one would be appreciated, but not compulsory.

Story for characters : You are in the lands of the copper dragon. Very much like grass and plains, few mountains. You are asked, volunteered or assigned, your choice. To accompany a small insurgency team into Black Dragon territory on a covert mission.

Side note : If you play either a kobold or a sorcerer with dragon bloodline , you will have served a dragon in person. Either as servent, apprentice etc. Think of it as how merlin served Arthur. Lower class with privileges.
Sorcerers with the dragon bloodline get 1 additional power. 1+Charisma mod per day, they can either have some one cast magic without fear of wild surge for 1 minute per use, or on themselves, same effect.

Hope that is everything :-P
Hope you enjoy

Dotting for interest. Please explain the extra power of dragon blood line in more detail?

Also dotting for interest.

Also just to get a heads up are you going with paizo material only or would 3PP classes be considered?

Right, here goes :
If you are outside the influence of a dragon or dragon type, you have to make a spell craft check, dc15+spell level. If you fail, a wild surge happens. Will link the table of possible outcomes when that happens
As a dragon bloodline, you can stop this from happening a number of times per day = to your charisma modifier +1. Either on yourself, or on someone else via touch. Each use lasts 1 min.

Does it make more sense now?

@talon only paizo

I'd love to play, sounds cool

Here's a couple of links to two variations of the same idea.

Suny 1

Suny 2

Thoughts? Comments? Upon return information, will adjust either to fit campaign.

Much cheers.

Only thing so far, level. Need to be level 5. Also, i take it in her short background you will explain her classes and how it fits in how and way she was drafted, why she volunteered, or how ever you think she got chosen to go on this op?

Alrighty then last question the Wyvaran are in the ARG with full stats as an example race. Would they be okay to play (17 RP) or not.

Hmmm, let me think on that. It's a built race. Not one of the races listed in ARG . For now, let's go with no. It might make others think the other races made are ok. Stick with the listed and fleshed out ones rather

Sounds great one kobold Crossbow Sniper in the works.

dotting will have a character up hopefully today.

Edit : Races in the ARG are legal to choose from. But not the custom ones likecentaur or drider etc. Just the core/featured/uncommon races

Edit 2 : Just realised i forgot something. Their are many deities, all the normal ones, except 1 change. They are all minor deities. The two main religions and deities are Bahamut and Tiamat . Bahamt the Platinum Dragon. And Tiamat, the 5 headed dragon, mother of all the chromatic dragons

What does 'outside the influence of' mean? Too far away, or without their approval?

@Paladin out of range. The older the dragon, the wider and larger the AoE. The youngest dragon covers a town, the ruler of the continent? Half the continent. Half dragons, or dragon blooded, like spellscales can cover platoons .
Some of the older dragons can suppress this effect to extent, aka half the distance. They can never completely hide it. It's part of how they were made.

What do you mean by max wealth for level? I saw the Suny char had 3k but according to wealth by level it should be 10.5k

Grand Lodge

Heya Sunset :) you sure like your elves and titan mauler...

Do have one question any restrictions on prestige classes? Specifically Living Monolith.

Sounds awesome, i'm thinking a kitsune summoner.

I don;t know how to upload my Character sheet but I've got a character complete with backstory. Traskdar the Half-Orc Alchemist, can anyone tell me how to upload it?

jeffy 2 wrote:

Sorry, both the Suny's are previous builds for past(Passed) games.

Will be completely re-building them for this game. It's just that having such 'bare bones' makes things easier for me.

Also, hello to yourself Algar Lysandris. (^_^)

Seth86:
So...would probably go with either the Ninja/Monk as a sort of 'spy'/'Special operatives' kind of character.

OR

Fully develop the Titan Mauler/Magus to create a very large-sword wielder.

Your thoughts?

Also...how do you feel about adding 'Templates'? I actually have a 'half Dragon' character that also might be fun to play.

Very much cheers to all.

Here we go, here's Traskdar: http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=636793

What are Bahamut and Tiamat's domains and favored weapons? I would assume their alignments to be LG and CE, respectively?

@Void, it's not a 3pp, so no issue. I just would like people not to go to PC too quickly. Just so you can get a feel for your character and others. But i won't force you :-)

@ billy welcome. I will have a look at character and then prob ask some questions

@Jeff chemists are fun. .il have a look when you submit

@, ninja/monk sounds good. Copper dragons are known for being fun and tricksy and pull pranks.

@ Paladin . I will try and link their portfolios

Ninja/Monk it shall be. *Bows*

Also..I have a rather severe bout of flue atm and not much time off between shift work. When was the cut off date again?

Very much cheers to all. :)

I'm thinking this weekend, Sunday or Monday

Tiamat
Bahamut

Here is my alias just putting it out now. If I need to change anything just give the word.

@ausk a belt of Str +2 is 8000.gp i believe. If I'm wrong, nvm. :-P

Also, no templates. Templates happen in game :-P

Dotting; will start building. Maybe a ranger, maybe a bard; I don't know yet.

And while in uffish thought I stood,

A question of race for the DM:
Um...I just realized. Is 'Sea Elf' actually allowed? Does it fit within your character guide lines/parameters? I know the information is in the 'Guide to Golarion'. I also have the link to where it's discussed on the forums.

DM's thoughts, comments?

Ok, looks fine just two change, you keep swim speed at character20ft, but, instead of water breathing, change it to hold breath. Like lizardfolk. And loose low light, gain deepsight . Aka u see well underwater.

@jeffy i don't know the biology of half orcs that well, so what you wrote bout potions and stuff, would that help him to do that after birth? Also, copper dragon, not gold :-)

Hello,

I would like to throw Hegron into the mix - he has been a long standing character of mine, which I never got the opportunity to play fully - his background is... Extensive, but also kind of incomplete, since I consider it a work in progress :D

It is definitely adapted to Golarion and its overall setting, but the logic behind the character can surely be transported to another setting with similar premises.

Hegron has a lot to prove, mainly to himself, so he always takes the frontline to prove his worth.

Crunch is also almost fully done, but some details may change here or there according to party composition [I am not 100% happy with the alias pic, although I like it, for example ;)], and if he is picked of course :D

Let me know if the character fits - any question is welcome.

Cheers.

I don;t know, I figure a potion of Fox's cunning would effect a baby the same way it would an adult, I just thought it would be interesting to see a baby with heightened ability scores lol, like what would happen if a newborn was suddenly strong and smart enough to do things

I would like to submit Hitoru for consideration. He is a Kitsune Trickster Rogue.

Rough idea for background: Hitoru is a good natured con artist who likes to talk his way through any opposition. In his cons he was always careful not to hurt the common folk, but he is no Robin Hood. The main reason he is doing his "job" is that he just loves the challenge and so the gained wealth is only secondary bonus. He might part with the treasures he accumulates and distribute it or give away but it is certainly nothing systematic and he knows that the people might help him back if needed.
He got arrested for a minor crime (maybe not that minor but certainly non-violent) and almost talk his way out of it till he happened to meet the copper dragon (or his "deputy") who was impressed (or more like amused) by Hitoru's oratory skill and witty bluffing and offered to forget the crime for a participation in the upcoming mission (even mentioned something like "expendable assets", but Hitoru did not hear him quit well).

The crunch is in Hitoru's profile - I will be doing some minor changes (equipment, languages, maybe feat, etc.) but the main concept stays.

I will try to expand the character background in the profile as well.

@jeffy: make it a bit more believable, I'd suggest rather have his family be unable to save his parents. His new dad might be an alchemist himself, and when he wasn't looking the bit older half Orc snuck in... and booooom! It happens like u described :-P

@hitoru : i think he tried to con, unbeknownst to him, the one who literally wrote the book about cons. And he was duped into a game where the looser has to go on the mission. I doubt hitoru would win ;-)

He looks like a military guy, part of the ones who were sent. Real in your face. A little bit of story on maybe why he joined the army?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Hmm. Doesn't list their favored weapons though. One of the symbols at the bottom of the Bahamut page looks like a Morningstar though -- though a simple weapon isn't going to help a cleric out much.

Nyroba Samradgar, Lady of Holy Vengeance

Human Paladin/Sorceror/eventual Dragon Disciple:

(Using Focused Study alternate racial trait)
30 pt

Str 17 (13)+1(4th level)=18
Dex 12 (2)
Con 14 (5)
Int 12 (2)
Wis 8 (-2)
CHA 16 (10)+2=18

Using the Archetypes for Paladin of Oath of Vengeance and Warrior of the Holy Light. This eliminates paladin spells, but gives an area buffing ability, and increases usefulness of Lay On Hands.

L1: Paladin1: Feat: Power Attack, Human Feat: Skill Focus (Knowledge(planes)) -- 12 HP -- Smite Evil, Aura of Good, Detect Evil
L2 Paladin2: -- 24 HP -- Divine Grace, LoH (5/day)
L3 Paladin3: -- 36 HP Feat: Eldritch Heritage (Abyssal -- gives claws 7/day) -- Divine Health, Mercy(fatigued)
L4 Sorceror(Draconic)1: -- HP 42 -- Spells (lv0: 4 known, at-will; Lv1: 2 known, 4 times per day) -- Perception is class skill -- Claws 7/day - Arcana (+1 to energy damage)
L5 Paladin4: Feat: Weapon Focus (claws) -- HP 50 -- Channel Wrath, Nimbus of Light, LoH 7/day

I'll post a stat block shortly. My concept of this character is a powerful warrior, born as the first child of a noble, highly traditional family, who resented being passed over for inheritance to the first male child, considering it (correctly) to be an archaic practice and a peculiarity of her house. She left to enter the service of her nation's Draconic Lord, understanding that her family had some blood of the royal dragons in them, and hoping that it would manifest in the future. She didn't realize, however, that her family is also under a curse from a demon, causing all of them to be at risk for developing demonic features. (These are my explanations for the Sorcerous bloodline and the eldritch heritage, respectively.) As she began training, she often heard a voice in the back of her mind, suggesting vague ideas of evil and chaos, but she has successfully resisted to this point. Her growth of claws pleased her, as it is considered a mark of Dragon scions, and she prefers to use these weapons when possible. If there are reasons to attack at reach, or to brace, she uses the massive Bardiche she carries on her back.

Her spells are generally for their utility, since she can't cast effectively in armor yet. (Shield and Feather Fall)

@Paladin : Looks good, your family will be high up, as far as bloodline goes. Only ones higher will be the ones with actual Dragon in them somewhere. I usually give these examples : Half-Dragons, Spellscales.
So, if i understand right, you joined military for reasons to prove yourself and to your family? or to spite your family?

A little bit of both, and she also has that little voice in the back of her head giving her images of her claws dripping with the blood of her enemies -- evil people, of course, or at least lawbreakers, servants of evil, those who are impeding the progress of good... or just who happen to get in her way -- no, no, only the evil and corrupt. Right. Right.

I am not evil, I am good... I follow the path of the righteous... shut up shut up SHUT UP...

Real in your face is a good way to put the guy - he is not your all out, full out raving mad, spittle ridden mad dog, since his father forced him into learning about tactics and the solid accomplishments of others, who used their brains besides their brawn, but... Yes, he is still "in your face" :D

I'll add some notes to his background as to him joining the army as soon as I can spare a few moments.

Decided to do a complete re-write on the back story as well as a minor change to the character to make him more centered around bombs. http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=636793

Here is a link to my alias.
The crunch is done but I need fluff still.

@jeffy so as i undestand it, you are a mercnary? joining the expidition for? money or?

@billy. looks good so far

Power of Faith you gain one additional use of lay on hands per day. You can spend a use of lay on hands as a standard action to cause a nimbus of light to emanate from you in a 30-foot radius. All allies in this area receive a +1 morale bonus to AC and on attack rolls, damage rolls, and saving throws against fear as long as they remain in the area of light. This power lasts for 1 minute.
Dragon ward (5/day) A number of times per day equal to 1+Cha modifier, you can touch a creature as a move action to grant the ability to cast spells without risk of a wild surge when outside the calming influence on magic inherent to true dragons. You can use this ability on yourself as a swift action. This effect lasts for 1 minute.

@paladin : remember to add the special bloodline ability
Call it Dragon Ward. I believe you can do it 5 times a day

Edited the above statblock. Let's make that ability fully explicit, shall we? I've put together some sample wording below, if you like it you can make it your official house rule:

Dragon ward (Su) A number of times per day equal to 1 plus your Charisma modifier, you can touch a creature as a standard(?) action to grant the ability to cast spells without risk of a wild surge when outside the calming influence on magic inherent to true dragons. This effect lasts for 1 minute.

Possible considerations: Perhaps you can do it to yourself as a free or swift action?

Also, for the general principle of this game mechanic: does this only affect actual spells, or does it also affect wands, scrolls, potions, staves, rods, wondrous items that produce a spell effect, spell-like abilities, and so forth?

I notice that at a certain amount of spellcraft ability, a character will auto-succeed on this check. In fact, I could easily build a character under your rules that could beat it automatically. Level 5 Human wizard, Int 20 with the skill focus (spellcraft) feat, gets +5 int +5 ranks +3 class +3 SF = +16 which is an auto-succeed on a DC17 to cast a level 2 spell. A wizard would probably have taken a headband by this point too, so add another +1 from intelligence, and maybe take the Magical Aptitude feat or a trait giving a bonus to spellcraft.

Was this your intention, to make it so sufficiently skillful spellcasters could learn to work with the flow of the wild magic and avoid mishaps? (It would make sense, after all, this hypothetical wizard is investing two of his 5 feats and 5 skill ranks to make this happen, which is a significant investment.)

For experience I suppose.
